Le secrétariat du SCAR annonce la parution de la newsletter du mois d’octobre 2023.

Introduction from the SCAR Secretariat

Welcome to our October newsletter. We’re looking forward to sharing the latest news and updates from SCAR and the wider community with you.

SCAR is excited to announce a new opportunity, designed to encourage the active involvement in the work of our Science Groups to mentor potential future SCAR leaders and promote professional development. Applications for the SCAR Science Group Fellowship Programme are open to early and mid-career researchers and each Fellowship is funded for two years.

This month, the SCAR Secretariat in Cambridge was joined by a new team member. We are delighted to introduce Angharad Downes as the new SCAR Administrative Assistant, temporarily filling in for Hayley Westlake during her maternity leave. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Angharad.

Since 2021, a highly pathogenicity strain of avian influenza known as HPAI H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b has been decimating wild birds in the UK, Europe, South Africa and the Americas, and pinnipeds in South America. To assist with monitoring the movement of HPAI throughout the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic regions and increase our understanding of its impacts on wildlife populations, the SCAR Antarctic Wildlife Health Network (AWHN) have established a central repository to record and monitor all suspected and confirmed HPAI outbreaks in the region.

We’re pleased to share a number of new publications from the SCAR community. This includes reports from two SCAR Fellowships : Lucia Ziegler, a recent Ant-ICON/SCATS Fellow, shared insights on her Fellowship, and 2020 SCAR Fellow Dr Morgan Seag has a published a new paper on ’intersectional approaches to gendered change in Antarctic research’. This newsletter also includes the initial concept note and timeline for the 5th International Polar Year 2032-33, an Ant-ICON publication on communicating science to inform Antarctic Policy and management, and the first Marine Ecosystem Assessment for the Southern Ocean (MEASO) summary for policymakers.

As always, our newsletter features a range of opportunities, new publications and upcoming events from SCAR and the wider opportunity. If you have content or images you’d like to share with us, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at info@scar.org.

With best wishes,
The SCAR Secretariat
